Just how deep did James Cameron go when he recently visited the Challenger Deep, Mariana Trench?

I posted the day James Cameron made that dive.

But to help get your head around how deep this was, it was this deep (you can link here to the map and see it in greater detail on your computer).  The depths are drawn to scale (horizontal measurements are compressed, with the exception of the two section view boxes of Mauna Kea and the Mariana Trench.
